    Former Financial Aid Chief at Columbia Is Accused of Taking Kickbacks


    The former head of financial aid at Columbia University's Teachers College who was arrested on conspiracy and bribery charges has been released on $50,000 bail. Federal authorities say a former official at Columbia University's Teachers College carried out a decades-long scheme that dished out hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid in exchange for kickbacks from unqualified students. Melanie Williams-Bethea appeared in Manhattan federal court Thursday after authorities charged her with making over $350,000 illegally.     Financial Aid Director at Columbia University Teachers College Took $350,000 in Kickbacks From Students: Complaint

    A former administrator at the Columbia University Teachers College and three students have been accused of running a financial aid kickback scheme that funneled more than $800,000 in stipends into their own pockets, according to law enforcement sources and a criminal complaint. Melanie Williams-Bethea -- who sources said was a financial aid director at the Teachers College until 2017 -- was charged with conspiracy, wire fraud, bribery and student aid fraud, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Thursday.
