Ex-Stamford Teacher Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Student Arrested Again

Police said that on Friday, the Special Investigations Unit received information that one of the teenagers involved in the case had been threatened. There is a no contact order on Watkins, prohibiting her from communicating with either student, police said.


One of the victims went to police headquarters with his mother Friday and told officers that Watkins had threatened him while he was waiting for food at a local coffee shop that day, police said. He told police that he became afraid for his safety and quickly left the coffee shop and told his mother what had happened. They immediately went to police headquarters to report it, police said.


Members of the Special Investigations Unit corroborated the allegations through video surveillance evidence at the coffee shop, according to police reports. An arrest warrant was obtained, and Watkins was taken into custody at her home in Norwalk without incident, police said. ​

Former Stamford High School teacher goes to jail

After pleading guilty last month to carrying on an illicit affair with a student, disgraced Stamford High School English teacher Danielle Watkins was expected to begin serving at least nine months in jail following a scheduled hearing next week.
That changed Monday when a judge increased her bond by $121,000 and left her proposed sentence in jeopardy after she allegedly threatened one of two victims at the center of a scandal that rocked Stamford High School and led to the arrests of two top administrators.


Despite pleas from her attorney to allow her to say proper farewells to her two young children, Judge Alex Hernandez raised Watkins' bond to a total of $146,000 in cash during an arraignment hearing on new charges, effectively starting the clock on her sentence on sexual assault and child endangerment charges.​

Stamford teacher-sex case inspires new legislation

State Rep. William Tong unveiled proposed legislation Tuesday that, if enacted, would prevent failures such as the mishandling of the teacher-sex case at Stamford High School that resulted in the arrests of two administrators ... Tong said that his proposed overhaul was not specifically about Stamford, but he returned repeatedly to the example of the Watkins case in the press conference he held to announce the legislation.


"The last thing that a parent should have to worry about is child abuse -- sexual misconduct -- at the hands of teachers," said Tong. "And then to hear that some of our administrators did not report these crimes as quickly as they should have, and did not take action ... really made us sick to our stomachs." Tong's proposed new law would dramatically beef up the rules around the mandatory reports educators and other people who work with children are required to make if they suspect child abuse or neglect. Every item in the proposal relates directly to the Stamford High School case.​

Why exactly did school administrators suspend the teacher, Danielle Watkins, on June 23? One administrator, Human Resources Director Stephen Falcone, has told The Advocate that when he emailed Watkins on June 19 asking her to come to his office on June 23 for a "pre-disciplinary" meeting, "there were no concerns of abuse or neglect." Falcone would not say more, citing the investigation.


The June 23 meeting was at 10 a.m. Yet sometime before 6 a.m. that day, Watkins, according to her arrest report, called the student to tell him that she "got a letter that she was going to be suspended because the school found out that he was sleeping with her." So Watkins at least assumed the reason for the meeting.​
