Mandatory background checks for California charter school teachers under consideration California charter school teachers don’t always have a teaching credential or the federal background checks required of teachers in traditional public schools. Currently, 1,118 California charter school teachers do not have any type of teaching credential or permit, including a Certificate of Clearance, according to the California Department of Education.
